The University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux defeated the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs by a score of 2-0 tonight in the play-in game of the 2010 Red Baron WCHA Final Five. The first two periods was total domination by the Sioux. Despite outshooting the Bulldogs 25-10 through two periods, the game remained tied. The cap on the goals was finally lifted midway through the third period when the Sioux's Jason Gregoire scored a short handed goal to take a 1-0 lead. Less than six minutes later Evan Trupp scored to put the Sioux up 2-0 and effectively end the game with 1:59 left.
Both teams were 0-5 on the power play. North Dakota ended its winless streak against the Bulldogs in the Final Five and shutout the Bulldogs for the first time in 82 games. UND outshot the Bulldogs 34-22 on the game, with UMD winning the shot battle 12-9 in the third.
The Sioux will take on Denver in tomorrow nights game. Denver owns a 4-0 record on the Sioux this year, and both teams have played extremely well down the stretch. Denver lost its first game at the X last year and are looking to redeem themselves this year. I expect this to be a low scoring, fast paced game tomorrow night. I think Denver has the edge, overall, and they should come out on top. Expect a 2-1 or 3-2 score.
