After a 15 year relationship with The Ohio State University, John Markell and the school are parting ways. The school decided not to renew Markell's contract after the teams less than stellar performance over the past five seasons. “It is an obvious disappointment; I have been here a long time,” Markell said. “I wanted to continue to be a part of it. But, obviously, they wanted to take a new direction and this would be a good time to not renew my contract.”
The team has combined for an 80-94-24 record over the past five years with one NCAA appearance in that time and no appearances in the CCHA tournament held in Detroit, MI. Ohio State has also seen attendance numbers drop from 6,556 fans per game during the 04-05 season to 3,096 fans per game during the 09-10 season. Ohio State associate athletics director Chris Schneider said, “This was John’s last year of his current contract, and what we’re looking for out of our men’s hockey program is one that is consistently successful, consistently competing for collegiate championships, and ultimately performing in the NCAA tournament.” That obviously isn't the case over the past five seasons.
